The key to not coughing when smoking is to make sure you don’t keep smoke in your throat. It is stale smoke in your throat that makes you cough. when you take a toke, inhale a bit of fresh air first, then start inhaling smoke. Make sure to stop inhaling smoke before you run out of lung capacity as you want to inhale enough fresh air after the smoke to clear the smoke from your throat and get it all down into your lungs. When you breath out, let all the smoke out fast enough that it doesn’t stall in your throat. The little bit of clean air you began your toke with will clear the remaining smoke from your throat as you finish your breath. If you are still having trouble not coughing try loosening your lips on the joint, pipe, etc. to allow some fresh air in at the same time as the smoke.
When you inhale cannabis smoke, the sensory nerves in your airways produce a cough reflex. This is your body’s way of protecting against irritating substances. It’s a normal response that occurs when you inhale any kind of smoke.
